Gritty and uncomfortable and completely gripping. I don’t think I’ve ever shifted as hard in my seat at on on-screen fight.

The Abyss 1989
Can’t help but feel like this was likely another “Alien” in another reality.
The two middle quarters of the film feel almost like a B-movie in terms of stakes and plot, and yet the first and last quarters are so undeniably Cameron at his best. Amazing sci-fi concepts and elements being flexed (namely the liquid oxygen concept) along with outstanding practical and computer-generated effects.
If you can forgive a somewhat lackluster plot line and just enjoy a great setting, visuals, and sci-fi concepts, I’d say it’s worth a watch
