  Only Coppola coming right off of Apocalypse Now could get away with making a $26 million fantasy with the self-aware artificiality of a 1940s Hollywood musical. He directed this using a video feed and a microphone from his mobile HQ with a jacuzzi in it. I wonder why, then, this was such an expensive production? 🤷‍♂️ 

  But engaging back-and-forth dialogue, top-tier cinematography/set design and an interesting narrative relationship between score/image save the film from being sunk by rampant idealism and self-gratification.

  You can feel the sunshine and carefree leisure as much as the heartbreak and youthful confusion in this nostalgic summertime love story with a strict dedication to realism. No moment in this feels outlandish, fabricated or insincere.

  Disturbing, realistic horror which crescendoes into madness and paranoia, ultimately commenting on lust/greed in society and in the family structure. All of this is carried along by an eerie score and grimy, high-contrast cinematography.
