Federico Fellini’s La Strada, set in the 1950’s, tells the story of Gelsomina, an Italian woman who is given away to a travelling performer by the name of Zampano. She joins him after the death of her sister, who had travelled and performed with Zampano before-hand. Although considered as being a neo-realist film, this film arguably has a more personal approach, a more philosophical outlook. It does so though symbolism and film techniques.

Agnes Varda’s Cleo de 5 a 7 follows a famous female singer by the nickname Cleo, for two hours of her day. As she awaits medical test results during this time, she also goes through personal transformation, recovering from her sense of vanity. This film has clever, thought-provoking shots, techniques and symbols throughout to show Cleo’s emotions and worries, as she fears for her beauty and her health.
