I am usually all for Bong Joon-ho's genre-hopping tricks. The Host is hugely underrated for the way it handles genre shifts, Snowpiercer is like a masterful juggling act, and Parasite, well, we all know about Parasite. However Mickey 17 appears to go out of its way to avoid anything that could be interesting about this premise. WTF this is so bad. Everything from the Peeping Tom show which makes absolutely no sense, to the awful French accent, to the doctor whispering the plot directly into the ear of the main character for five minutes. The camera tricks do nothing for me. The venerated split screen is absolutely fine - I suppose it serves a purpose.
Working through Brian De Palma's filmography has revealed he was a solid comedy director who all of a sudden decided to start "pastiching" (completely ripping off) Alfred Hitchcock. But to what end!?
