Ran 1985
I had to watch something special on my birthday so obviously I chose a film from the absolute greatest to ever do it. This genuinely feels impossible. You could make the argument that it’s the most visually-striking movie of all time. The fact that Kurosawa made this while almost completely blind is maybe the greatest feat in the history of cinema. The battle sequences, the wide landscapes, the Shakespearean story, the phenomenal acting, the limited but incredibly effective soundtrack. Literally…

Ivan's Childhood 1962
Masterful storytelling both structurally and visually. Ivan’s journey through this short 95 minute film is genuinely incredible and covers so much emotional ground. Compared to his other work, this is probably Tarkovsky’s most accessible film, so i would definitely recommend this to start his filmography. I can’t believe this is his debut feature

The Thin Red Line 1998
Beyond incredible. This is one of the greatest films I have ever watched and an unbelievable achievement for Terrence Malick. This really is up there with Lawrence of Arabia and Apocalypse Now as one of the most powerful and immersive war movies ever created.
