  I need some time to fully let The Cotton Club sink in but this is one of coppola’s finest, if not finest work. Coppola’s direction here is utterly sublime, the production design is lavish, detailed, and intricately crafted. The choreography, the music, the editing is all incredible.   Narratively speaking, To Live and Die In L.A. is pretty basic and by the numbers in regards to the policier crime genre. It’s a story we’ve seen thousands of times but between Friedkin’s confident, slick and cool direction, Robby Müller’s lusciously vibrant visuals of L.A., Wang Chung’s pulsing synth score which encapsulates such a distinct vibe, and a enthralling atmosphere of this crime laden city of death and violence, the film stands out amongst the crowd.
