As Ronstadt danced from the clutches of genre smother and pop star cliché, this 2019 documentary finds itself on a similar quest: traveling to the beat of a different drum. Opting out of ganja glam and oversexed 60s, Friedman and Epstein take a humbled approach to Ronstadt’s spotlighted career — portraying her as a woman who loved singing with family and friends, living beachside, and honoring her Mexican heritage. The ending is as sincere as Ronstadt’s beginnings. There’s no burning out, as folk rockers would claim, but a heartbreaking fade from the stage.
