With Soderbergh at the helm, I expected this to be smart and was not disappointed. Interesting puzzle box of a spy thriller, though ultimately a meditation on the marriage of the characters played by Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender.

The Journey 2016
A St. Patrick’s Day choice. Decently acted, if implausible, take on the 2006 peace talks regarding Northern Ireland devolution that became known as the St. Andrews Agreement.

Oppenheimer 2023
Nolan, as usual, is in fine form as a director. Strong acting throughout. Occasionally the cameos took me out of the film, but oh boy does the brilliant Gary Oldman nail a brief scene as Harry Truman. The shifts from color to black-and-white and across time frames added to a bit of tonal inconsistency. And I’m not sure the “whodunnit” aspect of the final third of the film was a good fit. As a history teacher, I appreciated the great care invested in getting the little details right in the script.

Dune: Part Two 2024
Thoroughly epic, both in its stunning visual imagination and in its thought-provoking handling of such themes as faith and power. Villenueve has an equally deft touch presenting court intrigue, blockbuster action sequences, and intimacy in the grand sweep of this film. Together with the first part of the story, this is quite the cinematic achievement.
