I wasn’t sure what I was in for going into this, but as a film, I was pleasantly surprised. As a human, I was broken. I don’t cry in films, and I didn’t when you’d expect someone to, but I found myself frowning empathetically a lot.
However, at the very end, being a man with two brothers, when the boy said “We’ll be your brothers, Dad”, the whole film rushed upon me at once and I broke down crying. I…
This film is certainly a lot to process. There’s no debate about the moving score, the breathtaking acting, and the gorgeous cinematography which is among the best ever put to [literal] film (VistaVision, whoo!). But it’s a lot to consider, especially the ending. But I was certainly moved. It’s brilliant, I just need to unpack why.
This movie is just wild. The layers upon layers, the incredible acting from Demi (and a shocking turn from Dennis Quaid), the MUSIC, and above all, that freaking cinematography. The gross visuals were more palatable the second time through, but the discomfort and revulsion of the first watch is what really hits the point home. Brilliant film
If Demi doesn’t win best actress at the Oscars, I’ll sue.
