It appears that the storyline deviated significantly from actual events, but the film's score, cinematography, and setting combined to create a very heart-warming story. Special praise to Eddie Redmayne for his portrayal of an increasingly-paralyzed Stephen (I'd imagine it can't be easy to display emotion while being in an immobile state)
