Maddening film about a pair of pieces of shit would be oil tycoons who come into a small Louisiana fishing community intent on drilling the gulf, which had never been done before. Joanne Dru's Stella starts as the only sensible person, pushing back on this invasion. Unfortunately she too succumbs to the pressures and, inexplicably, falls for Stewart's bullshit, and the screenplay's need to couple them. The whole thing is even more irritating because the cast is absolutely stacked and doing great work.

A stunning film. Malick's most emotionally affecting since THE NEW WORLD. Absolutely heartbreaking.

I don't think I've ever been more baffled by a collection of reviews. The negative reviews of this film insisting that it is exploitative are absolute nonsense. This is a movie about, among other things, exploitation. It is not in any way exploitative itself. Is it an "easy" watch? No. Is it a fun watch? Not exactly. Is it an entertaining watch? Depends. Is it a challenging and rewarding watch? Oh my yes. Bold, experimental, and uncompromising in its vision…
