Fitfully cute, mostly meh. But perhaps I’m not the target audience. 😉

    Nosferatu

I couldn’t decide between “Dracula’s greatest hits” or “the ultimate vampire vibes movie.”

Doesn’t mean I didn’t like it. But it did feel mostly like stuff I’ve seen before. Maybe I’m just too familiar with this story, but I suspect it’s also that Eggers - while clearly infusing the story with his own style - was heavily influenced by several other versions, including (obviously) the silent original that bears the same name and Coppola’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

    ★★

I watched a fourth Matrix movie even after having watched the second and third films, which is saying something.

    Overall: Meh.

There are some interesting ideas and meta-concepts that were fun, but most of it felt like a retread in spite of the fourth-wall-breaking aspects of the story. Once that part is more or less explained for the audience in the first hour, it clicks into just feeling like every other Matrix movie.

I’m a sucker for movies where we get to watch great artists become who they are. This one has all the familiar tropes, but it works in spite of the biopic cliches because of Chalomet’s riveting performance as Dylan (as well as a host of other terrific takes on well known and lesser known folk music figures of the era).

So, yeah, it’s got all the cliches. But I still liked it. I never really appreciated Dylan when I was younger. As I’ve gotten older, I find myself listening to him more and more.
