This did not land for me at all. Schwartzman and Kane’s relationship is confounding. I loved the chaos of the final dinner scene but it doesn’t help unwind or explain the core confusion.

  • Moonstruck

    Moonstruck

    ★★★★

Compared to the long slate of generic 90’s romcoms with which I’m more familiar, Moonstruck is very specific to its time and place (late 80s Italian community in NYC). Cher is truly lovely; Olympia Dukakis is knowing and wry, and Nicholas Cage debuts his particular brand of crazy. While Cage’s unhinged “come to my bed” feels a little bit uncomfortable almost 40 years later, Moonstruck’s very specific picture of family and community is unforgettable.

Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)

    ★★★½

I'm torn on Birdman. Good performances by Keaton, Norton, and Stone? Sure. But I get weary of movies about people who make movies, and this seems like just another movie made to convince actors and moviemakers that they are special. I might need to watch it again and think about it some more.

Somehow I had never seen this before?!? A pitch-perfect satire of the modern marketing extravaganza. The band is perfectly cast, Alan Cuming is a delightful smarmy villain, and the power-pop music is A+. Lots of fun.
