  I was underwhelmed by American Fiction. A lot of people seem to like it, and I loved some parts. The premise is fantastic. The scenes involving the fake book, the book awards, the ideas of art and race intersecting and the role markets play in that is all super great.   I'm still chewing over exactly how I felt about Saltburn.

  The writing is wonderful. The characters are brilliantly written, well-drawn, subtle, obtuse, unlikable but compelling. The performances are nuanced and, overall, fearless. Barry in particular shines. When you're playing a character that is a charisma vacuum, it hard to make the performance itself interesting. It's hard to write the character as interesting. But Barry, and the writing, does just that. He's quiet, intense, painfully awkward, creepy and off-putting as fuck.…
