Easily my pick for 2023 best picture. Every second is exhilarating. To me, the entire movie is encapsulated in the unforgettable scene in the gymnasium that strips away all the pretense of pure science and shows us the real culmination of Oppie's life and work. The unsettling sound design and visuals from that scene make it one of the most memorable theater moments of my life.

Dreamlike, beautiful, strange. Possibly my favorite Ghibli and a perfect sendoff (if Miyazaki really stops here).
It feels like they used to make movies like this about male relationships, but many of those were laden with schlocky humor, misogyny, and weird ideas about what it meant to be a man. The Holdovers, which keeps growing on me the more I think on it, seems to celebrate the best parts of an old genre while dropping the dud elements.
Likely a new holiday favorite for me, with nicely mixed humor and feeling. Paul Giamatti and Da'Vine Joy…
