The Cremator 1969
the cremator is deeply disturbing but in the most mesmerising way.
death invades almost every scene, from the coffins in the crematorium to the bones of a freshly killed fish. death is even personified, taking up space as a mute woman we only ever see in flashes.
it's all a portent of what's to come.
also, i have to say the camera work is outstanding; the unpredictable rapid-fire montages; the grotesque close-ups; the disorienting changes of scene. it's such a unique and confident horror movie.

Ball of Fire 1941
'looks like a giraffe and i love him.'
i had a good time, even if it did take a while to get going. i'd love to go back in time and explain what 'serving cunt' means to prof bertram.

i didn't see the appeal of this at all.
now, it's always risky when hollywood tackles class, power structures, and money. socialist commentary delivered from the mouths of the elite, naturally, doesn't always land well. that said, there are good instances of this commentary in movies - knives out and glass onion being more recent examples. but triangle of sadness is not in the same league.
the film needlessly explains itself to its audience, as though most watchers need to…
