Spun classic ideas into a fresh, new concept. This movie kept surprising me with the progression of events, which is not something I've felt in a while. What impressed me most about this movie was that although the story descended into a surreal chaos, the emotional narrative still felt grounded at all times. The strange combination of playful fantasy and dark reality worked really well for me. In a few words, this movie is like a fun maze that ultimately leaves you hella sobered up.
Bizarre Japanese 70s horror, visuals are reminiscent of the campy, smoky arthouse feel of Edward Scissorhands and All That Jazz. Crazy SFX. This film made me curious about the Japanese indie film scene in the 70s and what the response to this experimental genre was like.
