a master class in how not to make a movie, never has a "how bad could this be" gone so badly

    ★★★★★

completely immersive and haunting. Alice in the Cities meets Solaris meets And Then There Were None

The visuals! Embodying the photographic quality of something filmed by Tarkovsky for the flashbacks and somehow also embodying a contemporary high-gloss sci-fi chiaroscuro for everything in space

And for that visual contrast to not be uncomfortable-distasteful at all is a testament to how masterfully this movie was put together. Absolutely mesmerizing and transporting

I felt like I had just watched the male version of Frances Ha (but realized with Withnail and I being made 25 years earlier, it's the other way around)...the dysfunctional, self-affirming friendship locked in immaturity, the hoped-for restorative energy of a trip elsewhere, money not really a concern but kind of a concern and thread throughout...

I understand why this movie is a cult favorite, but I'm not overjoyed with what is being worshipped here: navel-gazing in its whitest and most male form

I watched Portrait of Jason on Criterion Channel's aggregation of "Black Lives", which is a little troubling given the film at moments seems particularly exploitative and when you learn that Shirley Clarke said in 1983: “I started out that evening with hatred, and there was part of me that was out to do him in, get back at him, kill him..."
However, if Portrait of Jason is a psychological wrestling match between Jason Holliday and Clarke, I feel he triumphs…
