Companion 2025
A delightful film. I know some people thought the trailer gave too much away but there were still a lot of surprises. I know some people wanted it to be grislier or whatever but I don't really feel like all ai-girl movies need to be that - this movie was basically aiming for the romcom version of Ex Machina and on that it delivered! Also delivered on being one of my favorite highly specific genres - shygirl playing dumb but is actually super clever and agential. As a Yellowjackets fan, I'm always ready for Sophie Thatcher running around in the woods. Good 4 her !

This movie made me realize that Kristen Stewart went to the Chloe Sëvigny school of acting and line delivery

Sleeping Beauty 2011
If you take the story literally, this film ages extremely poorly. If you can experience the narrative as a metaphor or more abstractly, it's a beautiful, tender story about agential passivity, perverse passivity, objectifying passivity, perceived passivity, bored passivity...all the passivities. Emily Browning plays opacity and quietness with subtlety and complexity. Between the uneasy/disturbing literal narrative and the beautiful things happening on a conceptual level, I feel unsettled by this film's aesthetics and politics yet find myself relating to narrator's vulnerabilities and modes of being (perhaps rather indulgently).
