oh the Tyler Perry of it all. Kerry Washington delivers a great performance in this film. A reminder of strong Black women carrying American history thanklessly at great personal costs. That being said, the stiff writing, relegation of real historical women to comedic relief, and the awkward pacing do little to assist the thematic messages. Too much emphasis was put on the women’s struggles and too little on their achievements. The ending was really heartwarming, and overall a great watch.

Visually captivating and wholly immersive, this movie is a credit to literary horror adaptations. Lily Rose Depp is phenomenal, Willem Dafoe is delightful, Nicholas Hoult is there. I enjoyed ATJ’s desperate attempts to find logical solutions amidst a nonsensical spiral until succumbing to madness. Every frame of this movie is so well intentioned. The costume design was gorgeous. In the end, all monsters are still but men.
