  Ok but when the love interest is *barely* in the movie so it's about "a strong independent woman who doesn't need a man but falls in love anyway" the movie is even *more* about the concept of romantic love as a prized missing piece instead of a part of the fulfilling life the woman worked so hard to build. Like there's no reason it's *this* guy, all that matters is that she ends up with *someone* at the end. If the relationship is incidental, you were right, you don't need to be in it, babes. Would rather this was about Laxmi and Akshay

  If TCM hadn't been preparing me for years by showing the last scene and talking about Barbara Stanwyck's performance, I don't know how I would have fared. Imagine going to see this in a theatre in 1937 - during the Great Depression - and having no idea what's coming. Having a mother who loves you dearly but can't provide you what she wishes could, and trying to explain to her why you came home from the movies crying so hard…
