Meantime 1983
Early Mike Leigh - his archetypal characters in another minimal, if not painfully sparse, plot-line. His characters are foreign, bizarre beings, initially off putting and ragged. It takes time to known and care for them, let alone understand them. Long drawn out moments, closely cropped shots and natural lighting gives the audience an ample, albeit uncomfortable, amount of time with the characters. Two brothers who run again and again into the wall that is their inevitably bleak existence. But at least they have each other.
