Good god, I did not expect to enjoy Austin Butler’s performance that much. He completely lost himself in his character, which explains his ridiculous circuit of recent interviews where he can’t seem to shake that accent. I was hoping the editing on this would be more “Moulin Rouge” and less “The Great Gatsby” but I was sorely mistaken. Felt like the choppy style Luhrmann is known for and Hanks’ caricature villain (ugh that accent) challenged any real depth the movie could have, but Butler ultimately saved it from disaster.
