Miss me with the dog slander!! In all seriousness, I struggled with this one. It’s fantastic that we’re seeing more animation from non-Disney creators take the silver screen. I really liked the choice to rely purely on sound and score, and so many scenes were beautifully animated. But I found myself constantly stuck on establishing what the laws of this world were, something that this film’s peer The Wild Robot did incredibly well. Where are we and why? What is the…

Michael Collins 1996
Immediately enhanced experience watching this film on St. Patrick’s Day ☘️ The writing isn’t memorable, but this is made up for by a stacked cast. Liam Neeson and Aidan Quinn give very commendable performances, and it was fun to see Alan Rickman, Brendan Gleeson, and Charles Dance all in this too! That said, I do not understand why Julia Roberts is here, beyond the fact that everyone in 1990s Hollywood wanted to cast her in their movies. Americans can’t do Irish accents, I’m sorry! Anyway Éirinn go Brách.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon 2009
One star for “Bella, where the hell have you been loca?!” One star for Taylor Lautner doing his damnedest to sell those lines wearing nothing but jorts. Half star because I’m Team Edward and Edward isn’t in this enough!! The amount of memorable fan lore and memery surrounding this film dips significantly compared to the first, exposing the weaker script, acting, and soundtrack choices.

The Brutalist 2024
Beautiful, harrowing, and a constant thrumming that the American Dream is but a hair’s breadth away from crumbling into an absolute nightmare. The opening sequence leading to the Statue of Liberty had me in tears. I’d watch that first half again and again. What a lasting image for the intermission; more 3+ hour movies need this. The second half strayed a bit for me, but I still found it deeply moving. What a score!! Adrien Brody, Guy Pearce, Felicity Jones, all *chef’s kiss.* I have never wanted to close a cigarette lighter with one hand more. Here for the Doylestown smear campaign—you’ll never be Philadelphia.
