This movie tries way too hard to be quirky and weird. It succeeds at some points, but it’s ultimately uncomfortable to watch and not very funny.
The main enjoyment of this movie comes from appreciating its subtext and what the characters symbolize. The plot is essentially incoherent unless you understand what the movie is trying to say, which makes watching it feel like a psychoanalysis. I would rather watch a movie with no subtext than one that’s all subtext.

The first half of this movie is good. It does a great job of developing Nic’s relationship with his father and his descent into addiction. Once he overdoses for the first time, though, there’s no real plot development.
