There are two versions of this movie that could potentially work - it could be a campy, self-aware, and fun musical, or it could be a serious drama about identity, self-discovery, and how shame and repression can lead to such violent acts that one can never fully know peace.
Sadly, this movie is some of both of these films, and as a result does not stick the landing on either version. The songs forcefully (and awkwardly) wade in and recede out of nowhere, and even Zoe Saldana and Karla Sofia Gascon’s strong performances can’t save the film from its own ill-conceived nature.
