    Sean Connery was effortlessly cool.
    The set design was impeccable.

I forgot how, despite the fact they nailed the Bond persona from the beginning, this had the inescapable feel of a B movie

I don't think I've seen a movie which more accurately describes rural life. It's the spite in the face of apparently meaningless that forces them to Never Give A Inch. We work, we play, we screw, we drink, and we sure as hell don't take shit from anyone. Newman captured the nihilistic rural mantra perfectly. And Newman and Remick were masters in general at depicting characters which unspeakable and unreachable depth—like Hemingway characters: and this film was no different.

The film doesn’t work because in attempting to modernize it ditches the social conventions that make the tension genuine. The whole plot only works because Austen is attempting to satirize the absurd social norms which preclude open and honest communication. In playing up the comedy, the entire suspension of disbelief is lost and the film falls flat.

That said, the source material is no less great and I did laugh at times.

Dakota Johnson continues her streak of terrible acting performances, truly a generational talent. Inspiring.
