This movie has been my favorite romcom since childhood and everything about it still makes me beam. From the absurd premise to the exquisitely detailed set dressings, this film exudes charm and a healthy self-awareness. It never tries to be anything more than schlock at its best, and yet it still finds a sweetness that anyone who’s known young love can recognize.

I’m only giving this film one star because I thought DiCaprio, Mulligan, Debicki, and Edgerton gave excellent performances. The other star is for F. Scott Fitzgerald because he probably needs a boost after seeing his literary masterpiece turned into a vapid, vainglorious, frigid turd suffocated by a cloyingly sweet candy shell.
Don’t let the man in the rubber suit fool you.
