Really hard watch! Precarity of this youth subculture and precarious nature of NYC as a whole (I loved Clark’s photgraphy style really seeping in) pushed overboard by the AIDS crisis.
The health clinic scene really captured the fear of going in for testing as you look around looking at all the health info and posters on the walls… was soulcrushing to watch Jennie receive that news and go through her day in that life-altered state.
This film captures the violence…
the crescendo worked rly well like i enjoyed it more and more as it went… the more absurd the better for me. i do think the way the movie dealt w aging and struggles w appearance fell a little short (hence why I was excited for the body horror). the extra half star was that it was fun to watch in theaters and felt like a moment in that way.
Makes sm sense for Sofia Coppola to bring this story to life in this way; grasped the symbol of what Elvis was without feeling tired and also centered around Priscilla … tragic in several ways … you could feel the flatness and even claustrophobia / hopelessness of Priscilla’s life as she navigated her relationship w Elvis … and I think this sentiment of them living “separate lives” rang true in the film and you could really see that play out…
