Beautifully shot, but totally directionless. It’s a shame—the film has some very memorable images, but they never cohere into anything but a meandering succession of “big moments.”

No Country for Old Men 2007
Re-watched an old favorite. Oddly, as my affection for Cormac McCarthy’s books and the Coen Brothers’ filmography grows, I find my love of this particular film wanes a bit.
Don’t get me wrong: this is amazing. One of the best things in contemporary cinema.
I just find myself saying “yeah, but McCarthy and the Coens have more to offer.”
Maybe that’s just a symptom of having seen it like 6 times at this point?

A Tale of Winter 1992
The knee-jerk critique of this is anticipated by the film itself: that it’s unrealistic, idealistic, anti-intellectual, sentimental, and so on.
The response to that critique is there within the film too, however: you can’t understand these things from the outside. A doggedly objective or logical view of the world is only truly unmasked as a cardboard cutout of reality is when you are inside the real experience of such horrible, wonderful things. (Felicitie almost can’t bear the reunion when it comes.)…
