  I love to get transported somewhere I've never been and may never be. Mumbai in this movie is presented with great beauty in how it's photographed and great frustration in how the characters feel trapped or pushed out in a city of great inequality. The lead characters all have fairly pointed story lines that have highlight a particular social or cultural issue -- muslim/Hindu dividend, arranged marriage, gentrification -- but the acting and naturalistic direction more than compensates for this…

  I don't usually like drugged up stories with lots of dream or fantasia sequences but Queer kept me along for the ride. The central idea of wanting to speak without language, seeking to be part of a whole and the repeated images of Lee reaching out to grasp Eugene but unable to connect are so beautiful and compelling. It stands out against a lot of period movies about the gay experience to me because it's the older man who is in touch with his sexuality and the younger who is resistant, but also not totally resistant. Sex is easy to find but connection is almost impossible.
