Brilliant visual metaphors (cleaning the buckshot out of the eye wound, and the final shot of reducing the patriarchy to rubble will stick with me). An incredible supporting actress performance from the Mom. Older sister was great too. I felt like the sister’s motivations were slightly underdeveloped and just transposed from the older sister’s.

Elementary and iconic. Lazy 2000s logic that comes with its own physics. Who can resist?

Demi Moore in a (faux) fur coat scored to A Girl Like You. ✨ Does Demi Moore get a share of Edwyn Collins’s royalties? She defines this song for me.

The film builds up brilliant momentum, right from László’s dark stumble to the ship deck, looking up at that disorienting angle of the Statue of Liberty. And that score! That moment is nirvana.

Adrien Brody. Goddamn Adrien Brody. What a figure he creates. The shadow of the Holocaust then of obsession then of rape never drifts from his face. It’s all there. Guy Pearce and Felicity Jones also deliver brilliant performances, in harmony with Brody’s but brilliant on their own…

An important contribution to witness art, as well as to political resilience. I think the film superbly paid respect to Ruben Paivas’s legacy and to Eunice Paivas’s fight for truth left in the dictatorship’s wake.

Fernanda Torres is brilliant throughout, as is her mother Fernanda Montenegro in her brief role. The production design and the editing, especially the Super 8 vignettes, helped to situate the time believably.
