Dersu Uzala 1975
I was always gonna love this film - it's Kurosawa does Tolstoy.
Has that Tolstoyan deification of the non-urban, non-elite. But I think it kind of pulls back from that at the end. Towards the beginning Dersu seems as eternal as the forests and plains he knows so well, but by the end he develops a fear for the wild. Existential terror emanates from the screen in waves. How do you live when your own environment rejects you?

I will never get over this film. It's one of my favourite books and this adaptation more than does it justice. It's just too beautiful for words. Every element suits the vibe of the book perfectly.
