Thought this was going to be incredibly stupid, but turned out to be really great.

Samurai Rebellion stars Toshiro Mifune as samurai sword master Isaburo, as he is forced to choose between his family and loyalty to his lord.

The cinematography is great, with lots of overhead rooftop shots and symmetrical shots. It is very similar in style and tone to Harakiri, also directed by Kobayashi.

The narrative is a unique spin on the samurai story, and is overall pretty good. The final battle between Isaburo and Tatewaki is particularly great. I think the middle of the movie does drag a bit due to the back-and-forth nature of the dispute over Ichi unfolds.

Overall a great samurai film and recommended!
