A Complete Unknown 2024
A SparkNotes retelling of the early years of Dylan that mostly ignores the interesting nuances of his personality, settling on the juxtaposition of Dylan the thoughtful genius and Dylan the contrarian arsehole. It’s not a novel (or particularly interesting) interpretation and at its worst, the film feels so broad that it could apply to countless other counterculture icons.
That said, James Mangold clearly only wanted to make this so he could do Newport and he does Newport well - so well that I almost forgot how tedious the first hour was. With songs this good, your film can’t go too far wrong.
