Unsettling about human nature and thirst for power. Visually monumental and great music. Battle/ fight scenes were well trimmed. The sand walk was a bit Fred Astairesh. Timothee screams convincingly.
It's a Cluj flick. Has some good dialogue. Bravo can't pronounce words well, but he gets away with it. It's not vulgar, has a plot. It is commercial and low budget for regional Transylvanian audiences, middle class. Places products more decently than BRomania. It is indicative of the taste of the Romanian middle class. No money from the state so it has to make profit.
Kieslowski gave up shooting documentaries because he felt guilty that his films had been putting the poor and undereducated in a bad light. Aresenie... is not about the Church. It is also only in part about ignorance and the perils of wondering uneducated through our world of ideological vampire-squid organizations such as the Christian Orthodox Church. It is about the incapacity of leftist intellectuals, like AS, to find the angle to deliver meaningful social criticism without being condescendent (and insulting)…
Good concept. Bad script. Great visuals in long shots. But mediocre in close shots. Low budget translates in longer and sometimes tedious takes. There is a chase with limited cross cutting. It's great to see postapocaliptic in HU. Funny and scary that in 100 years from now all inhabitants of Budapest are Caucasian with traditional Hungarian names. Perhaps it was required by the Film Institute who sponsors the project :)
