The action sequences generated some good and memorable excitement in me. Wicked costume design - specifically the hallway of axe-wielding henchman donning black ski-masks and the drug-fueled clubbers. Tilda Swinton and Ed Harris steal their respective scenes.

Presents such a unique mood: entrancing but uncomfortable, beautiful but grotesque, fun but cringy.

Found the childhood flashbacks somewhat disconnected from the main arch of the film. Cillian is great as always, but his star power is almost distracting and the film focuses more on his generosity than the actual atrocities of the institutions.

If there’s a reason to watch, it’s for Emily Watson’s uneasy and chilling performance as an evil nun. Otherwise, just inform yourself separately on the horrors of these asylums in Ireland.

Note: I watched this in Dublin with an Irish audience, which certainly added a heightened sense of emotion to the viewing.

It’s a shame because I was really interested in the concept of expendables/multiples (including the social commentary and the ensuing drama), but the film pulls more focus onto the well-worn satire of the authoritarian ruler and human superiority over aliens whose intelligence is misunderstood.

It moves many directions but never provides a good pay-off in any of them.
