The Seed of the Sacred Fig

Wasn't expecting this to turn into contemporary geopolitical The Shining but I guess that mostly worked in its favor.
Well acted (with a dash of melodramatism I wouldn't readily associate with Iranian cinema) and sufficient as a reflection on power-induced paranoia, gender relations within one household, or simply as a timely take on the family tragedy, but burdened by a somewhat haphazard dramaturgical focus, needlessly didactic use of documentary footage and a greyish visual look.

    A Traveler's Needs

Found a lot of it to come together quite nicely, though with this being my first encounter with the work of one of the most prolific living filmmakers, I can't comment on whether its miniature design is any more or less frustrating here than the average Hong experience.
My own feeling is that it lends itself best to the more comical moments. Interesting to see how, uncharacteristically for a high art movie, the gag is used here as the most…

Somewhat warmed up to it on second viewing, mostly courtesy of Madison, but there is also enough intrigue in the way seediness and luxury, privilege and despair coexist here, there being scarce difference in the way Baker decides to frame a strip club and a Russian oligarch's house. The main problem is that after a while there is nothing shocking about the cartoonishly juvenile, vulgar behaviour of Baker's lumpen characters, giving off the feeling that his sensibilities are rooted in a kind of cynical distance from them, though it is easier to get used to it when they become applied to tightly paced entertainment like this.
