It seems like he wanted good visual and plot ideas to pull their own weight and "Fuck it, I'm sure this will work!" It did in Parasite. It just needs more structure. Or something. Take the red button visual metaphor. I guess we're supposed to see Mickey number one seven as a man who blames his misfortuneson himself -- so classic depression, while Mickey 18 is his hidden anger at the faults around him. Yet this basic characterization is lost in...so many other things. I appreciate the ambition regardless, but it could have been a wonderful, silly B-movie.

When I heard this was about the director sticking an F-U to the fans of the first movie (e.g., not me) I was ready to like this. "Surely, since it's a musical it will be full of whimsy, which cape and underwear fans despise." And there is lots of interesting metatext and screenplay with "screens" and our relationship to them.
