It's hard not to love this film based on the premise alone. While it takes it's time to set the stage and scenery of the protagonist's situation in and around himself, it never takes itself too seriously, which some may see as a detriment. While some points may have more style than substance, it's cohesive and enjoyable nonetheless. It's fun, it's evocative, and leaves an impression like so many tinseltown myths and legends that Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is based on.

Everything about this remake is close enough to the original source that if you enjoyed the animated classic, you can expect to enjoy this release. While the CGI is impressive, it was showcased so much that it affected the pacing to the point that I wouldn't have been surprised that they showed Simba going through lion puberty. Creative liberties were fairly minor, but they neutered the charm and charisma of the antagonist that made him so memorable in the original.

Is this the Talladega Nights of politics? Of course it is. Which means that it tries too hard for the quick laughs that rely on the crude humor that one would find in a high school gym class. Does Galifianakis offer any redemption? Not nearly as much as he could. The pugs are the only highlight of the film, and this is coming from someone who doesn't even like dogs.
