10 years ago, I would have thought this was a relic from a bygone Cold War era. In 2025 the thought of foreign interference is ever present. Every projection is a self-accusation (communist).

Entertaining. A pair of flawed men act a superb cat-and-mouse. This kept getting better and better through the final acts.

The Shining 1980

I've been working on some horror/thriller blindspots this year. Two movies that always seemed paired together to me are The Shining and Silence of the Lambs.
After first time watches for both, Silence of the Lambs is a more appealing movie for me, but it didn't come close to making me feel the dread that The Shining did.

Amazing pacing throughout. This movie manipulates perfectly with expert timing. Perfect timing to add emotion or make her seem cold. To add new evidence. To switch focus from characters and evidence. To make you think she's guilty and then innocent back and forth until the end.
