The Turnaround 2024
Pretty good doc covering subject material I am wayyy too familiar with at this point. I wish it was a bit more focused on either end: the personal story of mental health or the weight behind the call to action of the titular “turnaround”. I don’t mind the short runtime, but as is neither of these elements really feel that developed as is. I can definitely respect the direction behind showing the payoff but I wanted to hear more from John at the end.

Paradise Now 2005
Not at all subtle in what it’s trying to say, but it’s brutally telling how 18 years later every single element of Abu-Assad’s message is still poignantly relevant. There’s a profane sadness that echoes through this emotional tour de force, and understanding how this desperate situation has only gotten worse following its release is fucking heartbreaking. It can be heavy-handed at times, but if this film doesn’t get you to support a free Palestine, nothing will 🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸.

Another Round 2020
Loved it. Pretty much everything you can ask for in a comedy-drama about alcohol. Mads Mikkelsen plays like 4 different characters here; the tone shifts constantly and his outstanding performance is able to stay grounded throughout. This experiment brings our main cast of characters so much tragedy and yet so much triumph, diving into the good and the bad of our relationship to alcohol with energy and impartiality. It’s heartbreaking without needing to prattle on about the dangers of alcohol, and it’s beautiful while still retaining a sense of energy and joy throughout. This is a movie.
Just please, don’t remake it.
