Is a musical good just because it has good music? That was a question I tried my brother and cousin with after discussing this movie with them a couple times. We came to the conclusion of "maybe," since good music obviously helps but it is hard to compare it then to other films since great films have several more dimensions to them than just music. Velocity is what this movie has. Conversations are brutally fast at times and aren't afraid to leave non-native English speaking viewers in the dust. Dialogue is satisfyingly snappy and unsympathetic, which I like, although it can get painfully geeky at times. Lady Bird 2017
Being someone who is old enough to have graduated high school yet young enough to remember how horribly awkward it was, Lady Bird feels like a documentary at times. The whole time I was watching I couldn't believe how stupid these characters were, only for me to realize that I used to be these people. I can't really relate to Lady Bird in any personal way but her story felt real to me, which is something that truly captured my attention. I could've continued watching this movie even after its end, I was that ready to watch Soairse's character's life unfold until her death.
