It was definitely a play not really reimagined for for the screen, brilliant ensemble however felt a bit confused maybe that was the point but it’s hard to mix Christianity with traditional beliefs and get a clean read. All in all was a bit boring but we love the Washington’s so there is that
I love andrea Arnold - she is brave bold and fun - however this felt like it could be a debut film as opposed to an experienced filmmaker- perhaps its perception as I’m a man and a few women I spoke to really liked it - I thought Arnold tried and missed in my opinion - not by a huge mark because the penances were good - I think the film putting barry keoghan front and center feels a bit like false advertising- he seemed like such a bit part and perhaps even cast wrong but he is very entertaining to watch
You will not see a better depiction of a father son relationship than this film period. from start to finish an extremely unorthodox documentary that defies form. sensual, delicate, emotional and rugged all at the same time. and examination of an opposing form of cultural fatherhood and a child trying to make sense of two forms of existence which share the same planet but could not be further apart in principle. This film single-handedly revitalised what it is to play with form and slow, simple storytelling
Funny, harrowing and difficult subject matter - these types of films can be often very on the nose but Ryungano delivers with wit, ridiculousness and excellent performances - no notes
