Way swifter and lighter on its feet than I expected, with great fight choreography and a lot of flourish - a truly dashing swashbuckler and a delight.

I remembered being mildly disappointed when I saw this for the first time - it’s a much quieter movie than its outsized reputation made me expect.

This time though - i noticed how it just gently did everything it does really well, how the actors’ chemistry has a very sweet glow, how this movie more and more focuses on Diane’s internal journey, and how it’s consistently humane in a way that’s extremely rare in an 80s comedy.

Feeling warm about adding a full star rating, and maybe adding this to the comfort watch rotation.

A bodiless film about desire; about the tug of and persistence of the past; about crossing distances between people and places and times,)and the ways that can evoke conquest and failure in a shared and changing landscape:

     US/Mexico,
    LA/SF,
    (Im)possible lovers,
    Hollywood/Reality
    Past/Present,

Not just as parallel dualisms but as a web extended over space, both generally and the specific space of California.

The combination of fiction/personal/historical evokes a film verson of someone like WG Sebald.

    Of course it also…
