I’ve now been underwhelmed THREE times by this damn movie.
I don’t care if the gays have a hard-on for Charlize and Diablo (and Patrick), this movie is just meh.

What self-indulgence! Not even the gorgeous Gordon Willis cinematography makes this worth sitting through.
Director’s cut, with Springsteen music.*. Uneven but heartfelt tear-jerker elevated by strong performances from Eric Stoltz, Sam Elliott (sexy) and Laura Dern. Cher is fine but brings distracting star power to a movie that doesn’t need it.
*Also, director’s cut anachronistically includes “Born in the USA” when it’s set in 1980.
I’m not sure if this is a great musical per se, but it is at least, a very good film (and it’s infinitely better than Wicked).
