Leitch has a track recorded of making some of the funnest of late. This one is no different. Could you imagine the films of this year if it doesn't make it in my top ten? I might have to give Hobbs and Shaw a chance now.
I only realized afterward that Kathy Bates was the grandma, she just occupied the character and the other performance are likewise natural.
Evangelion 3.0 + 1.01 carry the 2 is the big, dumb, loud, quiet introspective, character study that Eva fans have been waiting twenty-six years for. It has somehow delivered on two decades worth of daydreaming of what I would want out of a follow-up to Evangelion. Is this the end of Evangelion? To quote Len Wein, "Do you really think Wolverine is dead?" But I do think it'll be a while before we get anymore Evangelion, and I am quite satisfied with the present ending.
Why does a big dumb movie have to be the one that shows how to do storytelling? Everyone is giving performances like they want to be there. All the characters act in coherent and human ways. There are some many successful setups and payoffs, that the one case that they failed to successfully setup a payoff is forgivable because they at least realized they had failed and flashed back to the moment. Margot Robbie is giving it her all and her success is clearly no accident.
