A good example of how, like with Solo, beautiful cinematography cannot elevate mild to bad storytelling, especially if it’s not agreeing with the tonal choices. This just isn’t that funny, and it’s directed with the slick prestige that you might expect from a more serious movie. I guess if anything it’s proof that not everyone can do what the Coen brothers do.

To Live and Die in L.A. 1985
Has to be one of the greatest looking films ever made, with an exceptional car chase that rivals Ronin and many other ones.

I'll start by saying that it's incredibly impressive how many high quality TV shows and movies Taylor Sheridan has churned out in the last few years. He certainly puts the work in.
With that being said, this is a good show but some serious shortcomings (and repeated Sheridan tropes) turned me off throughout the runtime. The landscapes are beautiful, and so is the costuming, but very few if any of the shots feel very motivated or intentional. This isn't bad…

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
The thing is, there is a lot to criticize here. The tacked on A24-style Trauma (tm) stuff, the sometimes overly done formal tricks (how many upside down road shots do we need?), the thin plot, etc etc. Yet, this still scared the hell out of me, and left me with a a sense of dread that I haven't felt since Hereditary. This takes basically the opposite formal opproach to Hereditary (lots of jump scares and a simpler premise), but shares that same sense of cruelness to it's characters and the audience. There is no escape, and every successive scare and possible emotional catharthis amounts to nothing.
