When the opening sequence is a young Stevie Wonder getting behind a drum kit mid-song and absolutely tearing it up, you know you're in for something really special.

So I vaguely remember watching this as a kid. Thought I'd check it out again for nostalgia sake. Leonard Maltin introduced this one on TCM and reminded us that this was Disney's foray into the space fantasy realm on the heels of the first Star Wars film in 1977. Apparently, Disney committed 20 million dollars to this film (in 1979 standards - by comparison I think Star Wars had a budget of about 10 million in '77). So, ummmmmm..... what exactly did Disney spend all that money on?

Honestly, I can't say I'm certain as to how to rate this film. The acting was terrible, the plot was completely ridiculous and inaccurate with regard to the subject matter, and the overall production value (camerawork, etc) was very poor. Despite all of these things, I was entertained by it, simply due to its absurdness and "over-the-topness." However, if it had been any longer than it was, then I probably would have found it to be very grudging.
