i think that it can be really hard to pinpoint exactly why this film is so unnerving, but i think the biggest thing is that it never feels like your presence as the spectator is unnoticed. even when directly behind the figure you feel a certain acknowledgement, there's no chance of sneaking up on it or escaping its realm. which is really the crux of all japanese horror: it may not be bigger than you, it may not seem unhuman, but it is simply how your mind perceives that which is totally outside of your comprehension
